Stephanie's actions

Land + Forests

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Climate + Air

Use Muscle Power

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Leave No Trace

I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land + Forests
How did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

I borrowed something to wear to a special event instead of buying new. It felt good. If we shared more often it would lead to less waste.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Freshwater + Oceans
What did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?

We as americans use an insane amount of plastic. The great pacific garbage patch is a terrifying example of this. I will use a reusable water bottle to avoid plastic consumption/waste.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate + Air
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

I enjoy walking and interact more with others who are walking vs. driving my car alone.

You really get to see an area when you are walking it. It's just a blur in the car.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Biodiversity + Wildlife
Educator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?

My neighborhood is awful. People litter constantly. They don't care. I have been picking up their trash for years.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Action Track: Community
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

Because it shows making an effort to keep the community clean for everyone, not just keeping our own personal space clean.
