Fernando's actions
Climate + Air
Declutter My Home Without the Landfill
Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Climate + Air
Weekly Meal Planning
One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Reduce Animal Products
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.

Fernando Terra 4/30/2024 3:05 PMIt was a great experience participating of the Ecochallenge, I've learned a lot about my own impact and was able to interact with other team members. I hope we all can take those learnings to our daily lifes and make a real change. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + ForestsWhat was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?
Fernando Terra 4/30/2024 10:26 AMThe hardest part of zero waste was avoiding food waste. I realized how much waste we generate just by preparing our meals. I think having a zero waste day is a good way to generate a reflection, more then a practice for daily life. My decision with this experience is to find a better destination for my food waste, I will plan a way to start composting part of this waste at home as a solution. -
Fernando Terra 4/11/2024 9:44 AMThe 7 Principles of Leave No Trace provide an easily understood framework of minimum impact practices for anyone visiting the outdoors.
Principle 1: Plan Ahead and Prepare
I am planning a trip for the wekeend and I will follow this principle to avoid leaving a trace where I go.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + OceansWhat did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?
Fernando Terra 4/02/2024 11:16 AMI calculated my water footprint and I was surprised that the highest uses for my household are in the bathroom and kitchen sinks. I will make an effort to reduce the time I leave those running. I will also make an effort to reduce shopping and meat on my diet, because those had the highest impact in virtual use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + AirWhere in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?
Fernando Terra 4/01/2024 12:03 PMAccording to the Carbon Footprint Calculator results, I emit the most carbon in food and mobility. I am willing to reduce my meat consumption and bike more instead of driving. The first step to improve is knowing where you can have the most results with small changes, I recommend everyone to perform a Carbon Footprint Assessment!
