Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 6 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Land + Forests
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Action Track: Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Plastic in Clothing and Water
Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + WildlifeHow do your consumption choices affect the health of wildlife and other communities?
Camille Serra 4/24/2024 1:25 PMIf we choose to get gifts and souvenirs that won't help nor protect the environment/help a community, it isn't something great or helpful. We need to learn to get gifts and souvenirs that we like but can help a community in need. To help it happen I searched and learned what type of good gifts and souvenirs I should get to help communities that take time to create such great gifts and souvenirs. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: CommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Camille Serra 4/24/2024 1:09 PMwrite your reflection here, needs at least 25 characters to be able to post it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: CommunityHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel? What results did you see? Please consider posting a photo of your cleanup!
Camille Serra 4/23/2024 4:17 PMMe and my neighbors went and cleaned up our block. We picked up plastic and many other type of trash -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + ForestsHow did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Camille Serra 4/23/2024 4:13 PMI always try to see if a friend has the clothes I'm looking for when I don't have it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + ForestsWhat was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?
Camille Serra 4/23/2024 11:31 AMI planned the meals I was going to eat, and I took and made the perfect amount of food, for it to not be wasted. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + WildlifeHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Camille Serra 4/22/2024 4:02 PMMy mom doesn't want me to use non-recyclable bags, so this challenge was easy for me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + OceansWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Camille Serra 4/22/2024 4:01 PMI used to use a lot of straws, but now I use metal or glass straws. I also use a lot of coffee cups, to reduce the amount I use, I have a reusable cup, that can hold hot and cold drinks. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + OceansWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Camille Serra 4/22/2024 3:58 PMI learned that many people use at least 5 plastic water bottles per day. To help reduce the use of plastic, I am using a reusable water bottle.
