Biodiversity + Wildlife
Beauty and Personal Products
Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 3 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Regenerative Agriculture and Me
Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 15 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.
Freshwater + Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 15 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Freshwater + Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Land + Forests
Advocate for Forest Protection
Using my voice can help create a more sustainable and just world. I will contact 1 local, regional, or national decision makers to advocate for public policy that protects forests and improves their ability to sequester carbon and nourish biodiversity.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Land + Forests
Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Climate + Air
Weekly Meal Planning
One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + ForestsWhat have you noticed about how it feels to spend consistent time outside?
Laurel Klein 4/23/2024 8:49 AMSpending time walking and playing with my toddler outside has so many benefits! Happy the weather has improved to give us the opportunity. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + AirHow did it feel to plan out your meals and stick to them in an effort to reduce food waste?
Laurel Klein 4/11/2024 11:46 AMI don't tend to meal plan for a full week but its going well so far this week! I hope this is a habit I can continue long term. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + ForestsWhat was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?
Laurel Klein 4/09/2024 9:46 AMWhile I chose this one for my dashboard, this one is a huge challenge. Having a toddler further complicates this. As long as composting and recycling count as 'zero waste', there is a way to achieve this. I may have but since using trash cans feels like a reflex, I need to be mindful and give myself credit for days I do not. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: CommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Laurel Klein 4/09/2024 9:38 AMPicking up a piece of trash or two is a simple way to help the environment. -
Laurel Klein 4/05/2024 8:30 AMBetween the rain, snow and cold its been difficult getting out. Hopefully this weekend will provide weather to get out into! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + ForestsWhat did you learn about the practice and benefits of regenerative agriculture? How can you support healthy farming practices for people and the planet?
Laurel Klein 4/05/2024 8:26 AMI am 'all in' for ideas that genuinely promote environmental and human health -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + ForestsBeyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?
Laurel Klein 4/03/2024 1:09 PMI am sad to see all the land clearing for property to be built. I find comfort knowing animals have a 'safe' place to be. -
Laurel Klein 4/02/2024 1:28 PMExcited to challenge myself and hope to learn something useful though the challenges or information people share
