Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Climate + Air
Declutter My Home Without the Landfill
Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.
Climate + Air
Weekly Meal Planning
One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.

Karen Fox 4/29/2024 6:04 AMI had a great time this morning, picking up leftover food containers, cans, bottles, and Sand Dollars! The Sand Dollar is not trash, but more of a sustainable part of the ocean and ecosystems. I collected 9 today. One for each grandbaby I have. Life is now complete.-

Karen Fox 4/19/2024 12:10 PMI was excited to be able to attend the CO Barista Championships with Noel's team yesterday. I asked the organizers if I could have the decorations they used for our LS Barista championship in the spirit of sustainability! They were happy to oblige and I walked away feeling good about the planet! -
Karen Fox 4/12/2024 2:58 PMThis sounds crazy but I'm going to borrow a Kitchen Aid from my poor daughter who always accommodates my weird asks. I don't know how much I'd actually use it with only two people but I'm going to try.-
Catherine Alexander 4/12/2024 6:51 PMI love it! Also, the best way to find out whether or not you would want one for yourself! :)

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + OceansWhere did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?
Karen Fox 4/08/2024 10:01 AMI was surprised by the amount of plastic I seem to get when I buy fruits and vegetables. I purchased reusable cloth bags. -
Karen Fox 4/07/2024 1:50 PMI researched getting a new RO system for my home. My neighbor had purchased one from Costco. I went to her house and watched how it filtered the water. I want to get one as well. -
Karen Fox 4/07/2024 1:48 PMI researched RO systems and found out you can buy a water filtration system at Costco. My neighbor has it and loves it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + AirConsuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?
